WHAT IS CAST HOPE?
Cast Hope is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization positively impacting youth and their mentors in communities throughout Northern California, Southern California, and Western Nevada through free fly fishing experiences. Through our program, clients build mentoring relationships, fly fishing skills, outdoor knowledge, sustainable practices, and personal values. Cast Hope's gift of fly fishing empowers each mentoring pair to grow closer as they make fly fishing a healthy hobby they can do together. Learn more...
NEWS & UPDATES
It has been a wet winter and spring but we have still been getting our kids out on the water. Many of our lakes and rivers have remained fishable, and over the last few weeks we really kicked spring programs into gear.
Our Reno/Tahoe Region has been busy on the Truckee River and local lakes; Northern California region has been busy on the Lower Sacramento River and Valley Bass Lakes; Foothill/ Sacramento region has been busy on the Foothill bass lakes and the lower Yuba river.
We are starting to run our spring bass fishing clinics throughout the Northern California, and Foothill/Sacramento Regions. These are always fun events as it is many of our kids first experience fishing out of a boat or even hooking a fish.
One of our more tenured Cast Hope kids, Hunter Derrick, along with his brother, father, and two friends started a fly company called Meat Market Flies (www.meatmarketflies.com). Hunter is also an active member in his schools FFA (Future Farmer’s of America) Chapter and used the creation of this company to compete in the Outdoor Recreation Entrepreneurship Competition. He made it all the way to the State Finals! Although he did not place at the state competition this year, he can compete again next year as a Senior.
Hunter also got his drivers license and was hired to work in his local fly shop, Fish First in Chico, CA. Fish First has been a supporter of Cast Hope since the beginning. This job will be a great start for Hunter as he wishes to become a fly fishing guide after High School.
San Diego Region Updates
Our San Diego region is busy building partnerships and getting programs up and running. Conway and Michelle Bowman are working tirelessly in preparation to open the region in Sept 2019…I imagine though, that we will start to see some kids out on the water there very soon. If you are in the Southern California area or want to help the San Diego region think about attending or sponsoring the Carp Throwdown or the San Diego Benefit Concert in July.
